I have just come off the phone from my Gp (i've known him for about 15 minutes/the truth!). . . I feel so angry and frustrated! Back in May & feeling so so desperate once more, i involved myself with the Nhs & asked for help, i have been doing private therapy for 15 years, and for the last 4 years i am 'convinced' that i'm suffering with 'complex child/Ptsd' and have had lots of Emdr therapy, and have done some 'rewind technique' processing. As i say in May, i asked for help & have ...

From the posts in the forum and the other communications we receive, it seems that their GP is the first hurdle for many people who have had traumatic experiences, present with PTSD symptoms or have already been diagnosed as having PTSD.

Although there are some very good GPs who are very aware of PTSD and mental health issues in general, there are far more who are near enough totally ignorant of the condition. Perhaps some reasons could be:

1: They don't know and can't be bothered to ...

I was referred to a psychiatrist in August 2008 who said he thought I should see a psychologist. The psychologists appointment was in November 2008, and when I went in the office she told me that she would make an initial assessment, then because of the waiting list, it would be approximately a year before I would be seen again.

I was then allocated to a Care co-ordinator from my local mental health team, who, although is a very nice person, thinks it's ok if I practice breathing excercises ...

This is a bit long-winded, but this is what happened to me. This was three years ago, in a different part of the country to where I live now.

I had been in a bad way for a while, in a (sexually and mentally) abusive relationship and already suffering from previous traumas. My then-husband pushed me to the edge and I really couldn't take anymore. I pretended I had a bad cold, so I could sleep on the sofa downstairs and take an overdose - I wanted it to look like an accident for my son, I ...

Those of us at the sharp end of PTSD know how diabolical the situation is for any kind of mental health care in the UK. How on earth can someone with a very debilitating be expected to wait months (sometimes years) for any kind of psychological interventions.

In my own experience, I had to wait over 18 months for any kind of real psychological treatment to be available. Although psychological assessments can occur within a couple of months, one is often told that another extensive wait ...

This is quite closely related to the GPs post, but it is a new question.

How do you convince a GP that you have suffered trauma, when part of the issue is that you can’t talk about it?

I am persistently disrupted – and stopped – by my fears, and I comfortably meet all the DSM-IV criteria for PTSD. Now I don’t want to self-diagnose.
